We don’t find much. All the texts we do find tell the tale of the Fate Tables in almost the exact same words. There is hardly any information about how they were made, the holy stone, the priestesses. By the time Aster comes to get us for dinner, we are frustrated and disappointed but still happy to have had the day together. When he approaches the table, my skin tingles all over. I have to take my time standing, breathing deep. He seems his normal self, though concerned about me.

“Ready for the second torture dinner?” Aster asks with a wide smile.

“Actually, I’m not feeling well, I would like to take dinner in my room and for Isa to join me?”

“Let me get a healer up here—“

“No, no, I’m just tired from…everything.”

“I can understand that, of course. And I’m terribly jealous of Lady Isa, not only to get to dine with you but that both of you get to skip this evening’s riveting meal.”

We all three chuckle as he bows and leaves the library.

“Tired?”

“I cannot sit through another one of those dinners after last night.”

“What happened last night?”

“I opened my big fat mouth.”

“You do do that.”

I roll my eyes at her smug smile.

“It was awful. They laughed at me. Kal was doing splendidly, and I almost ruined the whole thing. So, yes, I am skipping dinner. Let’s go back to my room. Min will be so happy to see you.”

Back in my quarters, we eat a lovely fish dinner with Min, who flutters about, telling us of all the wonders of the Star Palace that she’s seen so far. Once it is dark out and we are full and quiet, I decide it is time.

“Right, well, who wants to go home with me?”

“Jaylyn, no! You cannot be serious! Do you have a fondness for dungeons?” Isa is terrified and irritated.

“Of course I want to go. Anywhere with you, brave Jaylyn!” Min squeaks.

“Iss, it might be good if you truly prefer to stay here. If anyone comes to fetch me you can say I’m in the bath…But, don’t you want to see your mother? Your family?”

“Not tonight. I can’t.”

The fear is palpable. She fears what Michel would do to her more than any threat from the High Council. I don’t push her because guilt festers beside the fear in her gut.

“Would you mind covering for us here?”

“Not at all, though I think you’re daft. But I have some books here. I’ll be grand.” She picks one up.

“Min, this time we’re going to need some cloaks. One for you too.”

She takes a cloak and a thick dress from the wardrobe and reworks them to a dark black. She keeps moving her hands to fashion hoods to cover our heads.

I take a deep breath as I think of Raetown. Going anywhere in the streets is a risk, as is heading to the tavern. The best bet is to sift straight into my cottage. I just hope we won’t scare mother to her death. Min gives me a nod as she grabs my hand.
